NIKA has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Licensed Architect Consultant working out of our Rockville, MD office! As a member of our dynamic Creative Lab team, you will specialize in the planning, design, and construction of complex facilities and infrastructures.

The NIKA Creative Design Lab is a unique architectural design and research studio working to solve real-world problems through innovation. Job Description

The ideal candidate must be self-starting, motivated, innovative, articulate, self-disciplined, and confident in a demanding, exciting, and fast-paced environment.

The Senior Architect will be expected to work independently to assist clients through the planning and creation of projects that are rooted in a deep understanding of their needs, is fiscally responsible, and represents design excellence. They will demonstrate strong familiarity of the design process from inception through close-out, including healthcare planning, code and regulatory requirements, contract documentation, estimates and building codes. They will lead the studio successfully through the design process, managing workflow and production activities, while ensuring client satisfaction with the process and product. They will assist in business development activities, nurturing existing client accounts and seeking to grow our client base through building new relationships and project pursuits. They will be expected to have a strong foundation of project management skills, but also an understanding that management of the design process requires hands on problem solving, a growth mindset, a willingness to be inclusive of all perspectives, and the ability to see challenges as opportunities, not problems.

As a senior member of the team, they will be expected to display the highest moral conduct and ethical standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advocate and inspire creativity, critical thought, and design excellence both internally and externally
  • Lead/play an active role in the design, production, and quality assurance of all studio projects
  • Lead/play an active role at all charettes/production meetings; evaluate the quality of design and design activities and assure a high level of design quality
  • Engage staff in dialog on design, ensure design process is followed and influence usage of technological tools
  • Perform site visits to verify that the work complies with contract requirements as well as federal/national, state, and local codes and standards
  • Oversee and participate in production of design award/competition submissions
  • Act as a mentor, teacher, and coach to design staff with the goal of growing and guiding them through their careers
  • Act as a vehicle for the delivery of firm’s message on design; be an ambassador and steward of the firm’s portfolio of work with ability to guide and educate others
  • Express philosophy of the work with appropriate vocabulary
  • Assist in identification, recruiting, and interviewing of design staff at all levels
  • Identify and direct project photography, written descriptions, and other media in support of building the firm’s portfolio
  • Support Business Development activities, including marketing proposals, interview, conference attendance, etc.
  • Prepare and submit reports and presentations as requested by the client or firm leadership


  • Possess a minimum of 10 years of healthcare architecture design experience in commercial or federal sectors
  • Possess a strong design portfolio demonstrating design excellence and applicable work
  • Ability to empathize strongly with healthcare clients and comprehend problems from their point of view in order to develop solutions that best serve their needs
  • Strong working knowledge of the codes and standards that regulate the design of the healthcare environment, including but not limited to the International Building Code, Joint Commission, NFPA, and FGI Guidelines
  • Understand the distinct differences between Design/Build versus Design/Bid/Build
  • Review design and construction submittals, stamp/seal bid documents, troubleshoot systems, and assist project managers and quality assurance personnel
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with an ability to present clear and technically sound architectural strategies
  • Possess excellent leadership skills/foster teamwork and be able to work in a multi-discipline team environment and take ownership of projects
  • Ability to use good judgment and make timely decisions
  • Possesses knowledge of basic firm financial metrics related to project management
  • Proactive management style
  • Proficiency in AUTOCAD and Revit
  • Experience in Specs Intact or Master Specs
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint


  • Bachelor of Architecture or BSAE required
  • Architectural Registration and NCARB certification; must be able to acquire registration reciprocity in additional states when required
  • Understanding of/certification in Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (AT/FP) Design
  • Must be a US citizen and possess an active Public Trust or Secret clearance with an ability to earn a Top Secret clearance
  • LEED certification strongly desired
