NIKA is hiring for a BUILDING AUTOMATION SME who will provide counsel and advice at a highly technical engineering level on compliance and quality management in support of the Defense Health Agency (DHA) based out of our San Antonio, TX location!

  • Bachelor’s degree in applied engineering with professional engineering desirable; but can be substituted with a minimum of 15 years of documented qualifying practical experience. 
  • A Master’ s degree in applied Information Systems (IT) engineering, a Master’s
    degree in business administration, experience in military medical facilities, credentials in IT
    Systems Programming / Commissioning, Medical Gas Certification are all traits and experiences that are sought and preferred.

Position Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in building automation
  • Effective operation, maintenance, repair and management of large physical plant/infrastructure systems which support large institutional, industrial or medical healthcare campuses. This practical experience must be recent and within the past six (6) months and span continuously over the preceding five (5) years.
  • Expert level skills and extensive practical experience in all aspects of bio-medical technologies, building automation system necessary to accurately analyze plans, data, designs, operations and maintenance practices and the management thereof. Must possess extensive skill in electrical theory and practical applications in order to develop accurate estimates and makes sound recommendations for repairs, sustainment and optimization of building electrical infrastructure systems.
  • Must be knowledgeable of local, municipal and federal building codes, criteria
    and standards.
  • Must have strong interpersonal, communicative, diplomatic and analytical skills to provide highly professional quality presentations to executive leadership and large audiences.


  • Provides counsel and advice at a highly technical engineering level on compliance and quality
    management to Facilities Enterprise Engineering Branch in the maintenance and repair of major building, Medical Gas, Building Automation and physical plant systems which include (but are not limited to) building HVAC pneumatic and direct digital system controls, power generation, automatic transfer and electrical best source automation control systems; electronic lighting, surveillance and security systems; medical gas and medical vacuum systems; infrastructure support of highly sophisticated and sensitive medical equipment (e.g., MRI, CT Scans, laboratory analyzers, large and small medical instrument sterilizers, surgical operating room medical equipment systems, deployable infrastructure systems, etc.); solid state electronic controls and programmable logic controllers for industrial and large electrical power production physical plants; lightening protection and grounding systems, high reliability power systems that support surgical operating rooms; fire alarm and mass notification systems, low voltage and communication systems (e.g., nurse call and public address), video surveillance, intrusion and security systems.
  • Inspects and certifies Medical Gas systems.
  • Provides user level training on methods used to test, operate and maintain Medical Gas and medical support systems.
  • Develops and executes large and complex infrastructure repair and modernization projects which includes the crafting of measurable performance work statements (PWS), development of accurate current working estimates, collaboration and participation as a technical advisor in source selection boards, chairing project execution and kick- off meetings, serving as the Technical Representative, performing Quality Assurance and Safety compliance visits, performing design and submittal reviews, inspecting for compliance and design compliance in the installation of infrastructure systems.
  • Performs functional testing and commissioning for government acceptance of systems delivered through the point by point verification of design, installation, functionality and performance of existing and newly installed mechanical infrastructure equipment and systems.
