Senior Director, Energy Services


Alok Kumar serves as the Senior Director of Energy Services at NIKA. Known as a thought leader in the industry, he specializes in the execution of complex engineering projects, including ground source heat pumps, combined heat and power, and renewable energy systems. He has extensive experience in the design, commissioning, and measurement and verification of HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems. In addition, Alok performs energy and water master planning services, including investment-grade analysis for a wide range of facilities such as medical centers, laboratories, offices, and educational buildings. His clients include the U.S. military, the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO), and other government agencies.

Alok’s professional activities focus on implementation of economic policies on various sustainability projects involving microgrids, utility rate analysis, net zero, biomass, and energy demand dynamics. As a valuable technical resource and engineering project leader, he is extensively involved with the professional community, including ASHRAE Technical Committee 1.10 (Combined Heat and Power), Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies, and the USGBC-National Capital Chapter’s (USGBC-NCR) education and outreach programs.

In his role as a senior member of the staff, Alok nurtures client relationships that allow him to anticipate and plan for their needs. Alok is passionate about perfection, demonstrating his commitment to quality control throughout the entire life cycle of a project. As a team leader, he often leads interdisciplinary quality assurance control checks and becomes personally involved in ensuring that work is completed on time, on budget and to the high standards expected.

Alok did his undergraduate work in mechanical engineering at Ranchi University in India before earning a master’s degree in engineering at the University of Maryland. He is a registered professional engineer (PE) and holds an energy management professional (EMP) certification. Active in his profession, Alok is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and sits on the Board of Directors of the Montgomery County branch of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) of the National Capital Region. He is fluent in English, Hindi and Sanskrit.
