NIKA Teams with Manna Food Center to Defeat Hunger

Throughout the month of November, NIKA staff members have donated a wide variety of canned and dried goods for Manna Food Center in Gaithersburg, MD.  By November 17th, NIKA had collected more than 461 pounds of food to help Manna meet their mission of eliminating hunger in Montgomery County, where NIKA is headquartered.

Since 1983, Manna has worked to fight hunger, feed hope and transition recipients from a place of scarcity to prosperity. Manna stands as the premier food bank of Montgomery County, providing food to 40,000 individuals each year and helping distribute rescued food to soup kitchens, food pantries and emergency shelters county-wide. NIKA Designs Interiors for New Bowie State Science Center

Rockville, MD, June 22, 2017/PRNewswire/ —  NIKA, a global provider of architecture, engineering, and facilities  operations  management solutions, teamed with Perkins + Will, for the construction of a new 149,000 SF Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics & Nursing Building at Bowie State University (BSU). Under a University of Maryland contract for furniture, fixtures and equipment services (FF&E), NIKA was responsible for schematic design, construction documents, specification, layouts, material procurement assistance, and scheduling and overseeing all deliveries and installs.

According to a recent Washington Post article, “The 149,000-square-foot center is filled with sunlight and bright colors and state-of-art touches, such as the dynamic glass that automatically tints. It houses classrooms designed to help students learn from each other and learn together. The center — open, transparent and accessible — represents not only a commitment to those pursuing degrees in science and related fields, but also to a more collaborative way of learning.”

During the design phase, NIKA conducted meetings with end users, collected data, and specified equipment, providing comprehensive equipment schedules and cutsheets as well as complete equipment floor plan drawings. In the procurement phase of the project, NIKA was instrumental in ensuring all paperwork and specifications were accurate in order to transition to a seamless construction administration phase where NIKA worked with the facilities team to plan and coordinate delivery schedules and placement.

The BSU Science Center project is representative of the unique healthcare and institutional design expertise delivered to NIKA clients.

BSU held a ribbon cutting ceremony on June 9th to celebrate the opening of this stunning facility, designed to promote innovation in collaborative teaching and research.
